What Berlitz is to the study of foreign language, the Academy of Realist Art aims to be for fine art training. Academy workshops (10 days long with 60 classroom hours) offer art students the opportunity to perfect their skills in a unique "total immersion" format. Proceeding according to a carefully planned syllabus, the instructor begins each day with a 45-minute lecture/demonstration. Depending on the program, students struggle to approximate the likeness of a portrait model; study tonal values on a classically-lit figure; or apply clearly defined color theory to a pastel or oil painting. The intense format produces dramatic results. Beginners start to "see" with the artist's eye and professionals get the concentrated studio time they need to refine their skills.

The Academy periodically offers tours of major US and international museums and art centers, guided by professional artists.

The Academy of Realist Art, a small, private art school, was founded in 1989 by artist and art educator Gary Faigin. Workshops are held periodically across the country and are attended by an international body of students of all levels. At the Academy, the only prerequisite for enrollment is the student's desire to learn.
